Eddie Howe believes Dan Burn’s impressive start to life at Newcastle United would have already caught the attention of Gareth Southgate.

Southgate will announce his England squad for this month’s friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast at 2pm today.

Following an electric start to life on Tyneside after completing his deadline day move from Brighton, Burn’s Newcastle form has led to calls for him to come into consideration for the Three Lions setup.

With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar starting in eight months time, players who have impressed this season and are yet to make their England debuts are looking to force their way into Southgate’s 23-man squad.

In his pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s clash against Everton, Howe was asked where he felt Burn ranked in comparison to Southgate’s other England centre-back options.

Howe responded: “I haven’t ranked them – I haven’t had the time to go through it so all I can do is speak on behalf of my opinion of Dan which is that he has been an incredible professional since he’s walked through the door and I think his performances have spoken for themselves.

“He’s been consistent and very good in every aspect and he just has [to keep on being] consistent and I’m sure Gareth and his team will be watching.”

The advantage for Burn is with him being a left-footed centre-back, the only other left-footer currently amongst the senior England crop is Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings.

The March international break may come too soon for Dan Burn, but if he maintains his consistently dominant performances until the end of the season and continues to play a starring role in guiding us to safety, Southgate could give him a chance to prove himself at international level with four Nations League looming in June.
