It is the time of year when everyone creates their Premier League team of the season, and former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has included three Magpies in his.

There have been plenty of Newcastle players who have excelled during the current campaign, with Eddie Howe‘s side enjoying a sensational year that could end with Champions League football.

Regardless, some Newcastle players have been up there with the best in the Premier League in their position, three of which are named in Howey’s team of the season.

The three Toon players in Steve Howey’s team of the season

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Howey has provided his 2022/23 Premier League team of the season. It includes three Toon players: Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.

They should all be in contention to feature when the real thing is announced, as they have all enjoyed spectacular seasons.

In the words of Howey, both Pope and Trippier have had ‘exceptional’ campaigns, and he believes that the latter has been a ‘catalyst’ for the Magpies. That is certainly the case – the impact that Trippier has had on the club has been seismic.

Howey’s Bruno concern

The 51-year-old is also full of praise for Bruno, but has raised concerns about his recent form.

“Guimaraes has had another excellent season,” he said.

“Last couple of games possibly just gone off the boil a little bit, but I think all in all – fantastic.”

Howey then suggested that Sean Longstaff and Joelinton were in contention for a place in midfield, and there are no arguments from us on that.

On Bruno, Howey is right. While he has been outstanding throughout the season, he has not been at his best in the past few games. He admitted himself that he was not great against Southampton, while there are still concerns over his fitness. However, Howe has stated that the 25-year-old is no longer suffering from an ankle injury that had been plaguing him.

Regardless, Bruno is more than worthy of his place in the Premier League team of the season, and can hopefully end the campaign strongly with three games to go. We need him to do just that, as we aim to finish in the top four.

Howey’s team in full is: Pope; Trippier, Dias, Saliba; Stones, Bruno; De Bruyne, Odegaard, Rashford; Kane, Haaland.
