Dwight Gayle is yet to feature in the Premier League this season, but some Newcastle fans want him to start against Leeds on Friday.
The Magpies will once again be without Callum Wilson, who is still injured with a thigh problem. He may not return until after the next international break.
Newcastle’s attack certainly looked weaker without him against Manchester United. We created various openings on the break, but were only able to provide the finishing touch once. And I doubt Javi Manquillo is going to be a consistent scorer, considering that was his first Toon goal…
Allan Saint-Maximin started through the middle, flanked by Joelinton and Miguel Almiron, leaving Gayle on the bench. And even when Steve Bruce made changes, he didn’t turn to the £10million man.
The lack of football for Gayle is puzzling, considering he was handed a new three-year deal over the summer. Another example of the club taking the cheap option…
But with Wilson out, we need someone else to carry the goalscoring burden. It certainly isn’t going to be Joelinton, who has proven to be anything but a natural finisher since he arrived at the club.
In contrast, Gayle has proven that he has a scorer’s instinct. He scored 23 goals in his first season with the club. Sadly, that was in the Championship, and he hasn’t hit double figures for the Magpies since then.
But he still has the same instincts. And against a struggling Leeds who give away a lot of chances and may only have one fit centre-back, it’s easy to see why some fans want Gayle to start.
