Newcastle fans have been looking ahead to this weekend’s game with Burnley – and some have suggested Joelinton should play in midfield.
The Magpies were left to rue a missed opportunity against Norwich City on Tuesday.
Described as a must-win game, Newcastle could only draw 0-0 at St. James’ Park.
But it was seen as a decent result in the end after Ciaran Clark got sent off inside 10 minutes.
The 10 other players all worked their socks off, and actually almost secured three points but for a stunning Teemu Pukki equaliser.
Arguably, Newcastle’s star man was Brazilian star Joelinton.
Where many of his teammates have struggled, the South American has put in some really good displays this season.
And since Eddie Howe came in, the former Hoffenheim ace has improved further.
Following the red card for Clark, Joelinton dropped into midfield with Joe Willock and Jonjo Shelvey, occasionally pulling out to the right side.
The star seemed to be everywhere, and Alan Shearer named him the man-of-the-match on Amazon Prime.
A lot has been said about Joelinton since his move to the club in 2019.
He signed for a lot of money – £40 million to be precise – and has largely frustrated with his lack of goals.
It seems he isn’t really an out-and-out striker as was first thought.
And with his latest outing, perhaps a new position beckons for the 25-year-old.
Some Newcastle fans want to see Joelinton back in midfield against Burnley
Some Toon fans were so impressed with Joelinton on Tuesday night, that they have suggested he should stay in midfield against Burnley.
Shelvey at the base, and Willock and Joelinton operating as the two workhorses in midfield might not be the worst idea.
That would then allow Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser to play on the wings, with Callum Wilson through the middle.
Here’s what some people said on social media:
For Burnley, we need back 4 of fede, schar, manquillo and Lewis.
Then, Willock, Shelvey, Joelinton
Fraser, wislon, ASM.
I’d much rather see Joelinton in midfield, he was outstanding there for 81 mins against Norwich.
And no liabilities.

Is joelinton our new midfield enforcer, outstanding there on Tuesday

I’d be tempted to swap Willock and Joelinton.
Him and Shelvey could boss the midfield

At last… so no armageddon today!! I knew you had it in you!! So some tinkering in midfield and we might have a team capable of winning again. How about Joelinton as a box to box midfielder?

We need to start with Fernandez and Lewis on Saturday, both were better than what we’re used seeing this season. Joelinton is far more effective in midfield than up top

Forgot to add…
Joelinton did pretty well (admittedly by surprise) in a sort of defensive/central midfield role so I’d personally try him out there, work on with coaching stuff and see how it goes. Anything to boost his confidence, because ultimately that’s what he is

I wouldn’t mind seeing what Joelinton can do in the position Willock’s been underperforming in. I think he could do some damage making late bursts from midfield if he catches on.
