Newcastle United don’t have much money to spend this summer, so it’s a good job Lionel Messi is available on a free…
On Thursday evening, the shock news broke that Messi will be leaving Barcelona.
The Catalan giants have had a chaotic summer, with financial issues causing them huge problems.
But their biggest problem is Lionel Messi.

The best player in the world’s contract expired in June, meaning he has been a free agent for more than a month.
However, it was recently reported that he would sign a new deal at the Nou Camp on reduced terms.
But alas, that doesn’t seem to be happening anymore. Instead, Barcelona have confirmed that Messi’s time with the club is over.
Arguably the greatest player the world has ever seen is available for absolutely nothing.
And this has to be great news for Mike Ashley and Newcastle United!

The Magpies have limited money to spend this summer, with reports stating they will be targeting free agents and loan deals.
However, as it stands they are yet to sign a single first-team player.
Meanwhile, multiple players have left the club. Henri Saivet, Christian Atsu, Andy Carroll, Florian Lejeune and Yoshinori Muto have all called time on their Toon careers.
And some Newcastle fans have joked that this has been part of an elaborate plan by owner Mike Ashley: Free up some wages and bring in Messi on a free.

But will he get in our starting XI? Could he perhaps play as a wing back or as a ‘false 10’?
Of course, we all know Messi isn’t coming to Newcastle. But it’s nice to joke about these things. It’s certainly better than the harsh reality of life as a Toon fan right now.
