Newcastle United continue to be linked with many, many names following the takeover of the club last week.

The rumour mill has been in overdrive since it was confirmed that the Saudi-led consortium had purchased the club from Mike Ashley.

The Magpies now have obscene wealth, and exciting times lie ahead.

But fans know that it is potentially going to take years before Newcastle are rubbing shoulders with the elite.

Currently, the club are struggling in the Premier League, and there is potential for a relegation battle this season.

January is going to be very important, and the recruitment needs to be right.

Today, Simon Jordan has been speaking about the situation on talkSPORT.

In his eyes, Newcastle need to be ensuring they get a sporting director of calibre and securing ‘interim’ players.

He said: “If Newcastle appoint a sporting director of calibre, it would be a very good move.

“They’re going to have to go through various phases. I’ve seen some of the players linked to them and they are, to me, the interim players that will help Newcastle build.

“When I see people like (James) Tarkowski and (Jesse) Lingard and players of that ilk, I think ‘OK, they’re not world-beaters, but they’re a sensible progression’ so Newcastle can get to the point where people say hang on second, Newcastle are going to win things.”

At the moment, Newcastle are being heavily linked with a move for Luis Campos, the former AS Monaco and Lille sporting director.

The 57-year-old was responsible for discovering the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho, Bernardo Silva and Nicolas Pepe and then turning huge profits on them.

He would certainly fit the mould of a sporting director ‘of calibre’.

On social media, Toon fans have been responding to Jordan’s comments.

The ex-Crystal Palace owner has often wound Newcastle supporters up with his takes on the takeover.

But some people can’t help but agree with him here:
