It was an a amazing chance for the Magpies to have a good go at winning major silverware for the first time since 1955.
In the eyes of former chairman Sir John Hall, Newcastle winning a trophy is not something that’s on the horizon.
He said (via The Sun): “Without significant investment, we’ve no chance of competing with the elite. Mid-table is the target.
“I’m 88 now and fortunately fit and healthy – but I cannot see Newcastle winning anything in my lifetime.
“Even if someone comes in within the next year, it will take time to build a team capable of challenging for honours. You cannot do it overnight.”
Silverware fells a world away
Newcastle are obviously not about to threaten for the Premier League title, but many Toon fans just don’t feel that a cup run is possible.
Every fan should have hope that their team can put togather a few good results to win either the FA Cup or EFL Cup.
With Newcastle, there just isn’t that feeling. Jamie Carragher touched upon the feeling of hopelessness in a recent recording of The Overlap.
As Hall says, investment is needed and even if it came, it could potentially be years after until any kind of tangible success.
