Newcastle’s hopes for the new season were the subject of a length conversation on Sky Sports’ The Overlap debate.
Former Sunderland manager Roy Keane effectively implied that it could be worse; Newcastle could be in their bitter rivals’ situation.
That’s true, but it doesn’t mean that Newcastle fans have to accept their lot or have to like it.
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville also had their say, with the former calling the situation a ‘disgrace’, while the latter said that the good times will come back at some point.
“It’s a bit of a disgrace really with Newcastle,” said Carragher. “That’s the biggest thing you need as a football fan, to have hope.
“With Newcastle, there’s none of that. It’s just so flat, absolutely dead. That comes from Mike Ashley.”
Neville added: “Newcastle is too big. It will be brilliant again there one day. It will come.
“They’ll become the club they should be again, it will happen.”
Carragher has nailed the feeling around Newcastle fans at the start of the season and it’s a familiar one.
There’s little reason for optimism and little hope that the club will actually try and have a go in the cup competitions.
Perhaps, as Neville says, one day things will be good again at St James’ Park, but for the time being it’s a painful wait.
