Alan Shearer has opened up on his brief spell in charge of Newcastle on the Match of the Day podcast.
He was also asked by host Gary Lineker whether he would ever manage the club again if there was a change of ownership.
From his response, it’s quite clear that he’s enjoying the world of punditry, which he has been in since Newcastle’s 2009 relegation.
When Lineker asked whether he would ever manage Newcastle under a potential new owner if the call came, Shearer said: “No, no. It’s too late for me now in management.”
He also shed some light on how an offer to manage the club once they went down faded away.
“I’d done a deal with Newcastle; three-year contract, salary, budget. That was on the Tuesday after the season finished.
“Agreed, said see you Thursday to announce it. I got a call to say there’s been a problem with the bank and they never called. I’ve never spoken to Mike Ashley since.”
Shearer also said elsewhere in the podcast he’s not bitter about what happened.
He would probably have a right to be, but also acknowledged his punditry work is less stressful than working at Newcastle would be.
