Gary Lineker takes great joy in pointing out that Alan Shearer did not win the FA Cup during his career with Newcastle United.

The BBC Match of the Day presenter made another jibe about the Magpies’ FA Cup record ahead of the live coverage of Middlesbrough v Tottenham last night.

Newcastle’s north-east rivals won 1-0, making it two Premier League scalps this season and getting into the hat for the last eight.

Shearer, who played in the final defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United in 1998 and 1999 respectively, mocked Lineker in response.

Newcastle were of course eliminated in the third round this year by Cambridge, back when Eddie Howe’s reign was still to get off the ground.

Survival has been the priority this season but of course one of the benefits of the takeover should be putting together a squad which can challenge on multiple fronts.

Howe has Newcastle on course for safety and they will hope to look to push into the sanctity of mid-table as soon as possible.

That would allow the club to plan for next season and make enquiries with potential targets in the knowledge that they will be a Premier League club next term.

And the hope will renew that Newcastle can make a real bid for one of the cups under Howe and end that long, long wait for silverware.
