‘Shambles’: Gary Neville delivers scathing verdict on Man United ahead of facing Newcastle on Wednesday

While Newcastle United were not brilliant this weekend, they were good enough to win a point. That was not the case for Manchester United, who were described as a ‘shambles’ by Gary Neville.

They warmed up for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup game at Old Trafford with a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. Erik ten Hag’s side were completely dominated by their rivals, and arguably could have lost by even more.

Erling Haaland starred once again, scoring two and getting an assist as the Man United faithful witnessed another derby day defeat.

They do not have long to dwell on it, however, as Newcastle are next to play at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. It is a repeat of last season’s final, and the Red Devils are not in good shape heading into the game.

Gary Neville hammers Manchester United

Following the 3-0 defeat to Man City, Gary Neville was hugely critical of his former club on Sky Sports.

“The first half was a contest,” he said.

“The second half wasn’t a contest. It became a shambles. Man United went missing in the second half.”

Man United in bad shape ahead of facing Newcastle in the Carabao Cup

Newcastle were not great on Saturday night, but they did enough to draw away from home against Wolves – even if they were aided by a controversial penalty.

But Man United’s preparations for the cup contest were appalling. They truly were shambolic against Man City, particularly in the second half.

It ended up being a petulant display from Man United, who resulted in just trying to foul their opponents. Bruno Fernandes was the biggest culprit, on what was an embarrassing display from the captain.

They do not look in good form heading into Wednesday night, which could be good news for Eddie Howe and his walking wounded Newcastle side.

The Magpies looked shattered on Saturday, meaning Howe is going to rotate a lot of his players for the Carabao Cup clash. However, he has limited options due to injury.

Regardless of the team he picks, Howe will know that his players have a chance, as Manchester United are clearly not in a good place ahead of Wednesday. If they produce another shambolic display, it could give Newcastle the perfect chance to get Carabao Cup revenge and advance to the next round.
