Newcastle United received a big slice of luck on Saturday night during their 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Magpies were far from their best, but were able to return home from Molineux with a point. That was down to Callum Wilson, whose brace took his goal tally for the season to seven.
Newcastle led twice against Wolves thanks to Wilson, but his second goal was dripping with controversy.
It came from the spot, after referee Anthony Taylor awarded Newcastle a penalty. Hwang Hee-Chan was judged to have fouled Fabian Schar, and the decision stood despite a lengthy VAR check.
The more you looked at it, the more it became clear that an incorrect decision had been made and that it should not be a penalty.
But the referee was not instructed to have another look or to change his decision, meaning Newcastle had the chance to score from 12 yards. Callum Wilson took the chance, ensuring the Magpies were ahead going into half time.
It was a very poor decision, and one that Alan Shearer did not agree with during the game. And now the Toon legend has gone into a more detail about it and explained why he thinks it was given.
Alan Shearer does not think Newcastle deserved a penalty vs Wolves
Speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer has provided an interesting theory on why Newcastle were awarded a penalty on Saturday evening.
“Newcastle had a penalty which should never have been a penalty,” he said.
“I always tell the decision how it was – whether it’s Newcastle or not and that shouldn’t have been a penalty.
“Everyone I have spoken to over the weekend, even former referees, even when I’m in there today people are saying to me that it should never have been a penalty and the VAR should have overruled it.
“I don’t know but I think seniority won the day on that decision because Anthony Taylor was the referee at the Newcastle game and you have a lesser experience guy on the VAR. Is he going to tell him he’s got to go and have a look at the VAR and he’s made a serious error? No, of course he’s not.”

A big mistake was made during Wolves vs Newcastle
It is an interesting theory from Shearer. The VAR official for the game was Jarred Gillett, who is much less experienced than Taylor.
However, that should not really have a baring on the decision. If that was why the decision was not overturned, it certainly is not an acceptable way to officiate a game.
It was clearly an incorrect decision, and one that Newcastle massively benefitted from. It was no wonder Wolves fans were so furious during and after the game.
You would struggle to find the most devoted Newcastle fan say it should have been a penalty, which tells you exactly how bad a decision it was.
