Newcastle United could potentially miss out on a summer transfer target to West Ham.

After selling Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham Hotspur for £55million, West Ham are ready to reinvest. Graham Potter is looking to overhaul a squad that struggled last season, with the Hammers ending the 2024/25 season in 14th position.

They could even bring in a Premier League winner, with Liverpool star Harvey Elliott on their radar.

However, it is West Ham who could potentially strike a deal for the 22-year-old rather than Newcastle United.

That is according to the Guardian, who report that West Ham are optimistic that they can sign Elliott from Liverpool this summer.

The report describes Elliott as a ‘key target’ for West Ham, with Liverpool potentially open to the idea of cashing in on the versatile midfielder.

A deal will not be cheap, with Geordie Boot Boys told that the Reds want £50million for Elliott. That kind of fee would make him one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever, while it would also threaten West Ham’s transfer record. That honour currently belongs to Lucas Paqueta after his £51million arrival from Lyon.

Talk of West Ham being interested should be a concern to Newcastle United, who are not currently focussed on bringing in a midfielder. Newcastle are prioritising a striker, with Hugo Ekitike and Yoane Wissa named as targets.

Due to not having a sporting director, Newcastle can only work on one deal at a time, which could result in them missing out on targets. That could potentially be the case with Elliott if West Ham step up their pursuit.

Talk of Elliott leaving Liverpool comes on the back of him winning the European Under-21 Championship with England. He was exceptional for Lee Carlsey’s side, winning the Player of the Tournament award thanks to his performances.

He played a key role in the young Three Lions retaining their crown, and Elliott won a lot of praise from former player Joe Cole.

I love the kid, he plays football the right way,” Cole told Channel 4 after England’s semi-final win over Netherlands.

“I am excited for his future. He has done a great job for Liverpool, but if he decides to move on, there are levels to move on again. That passion, he can show every week.

“Anyone outside the top six he comfortably walks into, and then two years on that level he comes back to Liverpool’s level and competes.

“He started as a young man at Fulham but his learning has been spread out. Teams from all over Europe will be looking for Harvey Elliott’s agent’s number.”

Cole added: “His problem is he can do so many good things. He’s a victim of his own skills and that is why he has been so good for Liverpool. They can play him anywhere.”

That versatility is a key reason why Newcastle United are fond of him, but it is West Ham who could secure his signature.
