Sean Longstaff has now revealed what had frustrated Newcastle United the most during their first half of their game against Sunderland yesterday.
Newcastle thrashed their biggest opponents 3-0 in the FA Cup third round, but it wasn’t completely smooth sailing in the opening 45 minutes.
Speaking to NUFCTV, Longstaff shared how important the first goal was as they were at risk of getting a little nervous after dominating the game but having nothing to show for it.
Longstaff says the first goal was ‘massive’ for Newcastle
Newcastle had absolutely dominated the game from start to finish, but there was just a slight concern that they would once again overthink things and struggle to create big chances despite having all of the ball.
We’ve seen it countless times before where the team look like they’re in control of the game but are just passing it side to side before being hit with a quick counter and conceding.
Fortunately, Newcastle’s quality was just too great for Sunderland and the Magpies were able to grab the opening goal after a brilliant cross from Joelinton which Dan Ballard turned into his own net.
Longstaff knew that this was absolutely key for the rest of the game as it settled the team down and meant they could play with more freedom throughout the rest of the afternoon.
After the game, Longstaff said: “It was massive. I think the longer it goes, the longer you’re on top and you don’t score you get a little bit nervous.
“I think the goal settled us down and got their crowd a little bit on edge as well.”

Newcastle needed a big result yesterday
Keeping the fact that it was the first Tyne-Wear derby for eight years aside, Newcastle really needed to get a positive result yesterday regardless of who was the opposition.
Having been knocked out of both the Champions League and Carabao Cup in quick succession, the FA Cup remained Newcastle’s only realistic shot at a trophy this season and their recent record in the competition was worrying.
Their form coming into the match, losing seven of their last eight, was also starting to become a problem with Manchester City and Aston Villa up next, so this result should just ease the pressure on Eddie Howe.
Newcastle will now look ahead to the fourth round draw which will be on ITV on Monday night where they will hopefully get an easier draw for the first time this season.
