Robbie Savage delivers his verdict on whether Newcastle should part company with Eddie Howe now

Robbie Savage has revealed what he thinks Newcastle United should do with Eddie Howe after their miserable run of form in the last couple of months.

Howe is coming under huge pressure after losing seven of his last eight games with Newcastle and being knocked out of the Champions League and Carabao Cup, and he now faces Sunderland in the FA Cup.

Speaking to Football365, however, Savage claimed that Howe’s successes last season should give him more time to turn this form around beyond January.

Savage says Howe deserves more time

Newcastle were way ahead of schedule last season. The ultimate goal set in place when the takeover was completed was to achieve top four within the next fives years, and they did that in just two.

It was an incredible run considering there wasn’t that much invested into the squad compared to the teams around Newcastle, but Howe is now becoming a victim of his own success as the expectations have been rasied.

From within the club, however, they appreciate that Newcastle were ahead of schedule and are not putting pressure on Howe to repeat the same feat this season.

Ahead of this huge cup tie against Sunderland, Savage has a similar perspective on the pressure mounting on Howe and thinks that he’s done enough in the past to warrant Newcastle giving him a chance to turn things around.

Speaking to Football365, Savage said: “Newcastle United are now one of the richest clubs in the world and they will want success.

“They got to a final last season, qualified for the Champions League. They were unfortunate to go out of Europe – let’s not forget that decision against PSG away from home, that was vital – it was such a difficult group and they nearly got out of it. Such fine margins.

“Eddie Howe overachieved massively last season. Newcastle have no right to qualify for the Champions League, so he did an unbelievable job. This year, the amount of injuries they’ve had has been quite unbelievable.

“I think Eddie Howe needs more time. I like the way he speaks: he never gets too high or too low, he’s always level-headed with his reactions, he never moans about injuries.

“So I think Eddie Howe deserves more time. They’re going through a difficult spell at the minute, but they can concentrate now on trying to pick up a trophy for those amazing Newcastle fans.

Howe could lose every game in January and still be in a job

Questions are always going to be asked about Howe’s future because he isn’t a fancy name or a title-winning manager with a proven track record, the media are just waiting for him to slip up.

But what is rumoured on social media does not represent how the ownership feel which is the most important thing to the 46-year-old head coach who will certainly be feeling the pressure now.

In fact, every indication so far suggests that Howe could go on to lose against Sunderland, Manchester City, and Aston Villa this month and still be Newcastle manager.

Of course, this would put huge pressure on the following games in the Premier League which he pretty much has to win, but it does show how unwavering their support is of Howe.
