Romano expects Newcastle to prioritise signing a winger in January

Newcastle United want to sign a winger when the January transfer window opens, and Fabrizio Romano believes it will be the Magpies’ priority.

Eddie Howe wanted to sign one in the summer, with the likes of Jack Harrison and Moussa Diaby heavily linked with moves to St James’ Park.

However, neither joined Newcastle, with Howe failing to get the winger he craved.

Luckily, it hasn’t mattered due to the sensational form of Miguel Almiron. The Paraguayan has been incredible on the right of attack, and is currently the club’s top scorer with eight goals.

His form has lessened the need for a winger, but it is still a position of interest for Newcastle heading into January.

It was recently reported that Howe wants a wide forward, a right-back and a midfielder next month. Now Romano has provided an update on which position will take priority for the Magpies.

Romano’s update on Newcastle wanting a winger

The transfer expert has been speaking to Caught Offside, and gave his thoughts on what Newcastle will do during the January transfer window.

“Newcastle wanted a winger in the summer, so they are still exploring the market for that position ahead of January,” he wrote.

“I expect that to be one of their priorities.”

Leandro Trossard has been heavily linked

While Diaby was the main target during the summer, his name has barely been mentioned heading into January.

Instead, it sounds like Leandro Trossard could be Newcastle’s main target when it comes to wide options. The Magpies have also been linked with Marcus Thuram, who is capable of playing anywhere across the front.

Either of those players would be exciting additions. Trossard has been sensational this season, and has been one of the Premier League’s standout players alongside Almiron. As for Thuram, he could be available for less than £10million given his contract situation, and already has 17 goal contributions in Germany this season.

There are plenty of options out there, but Newcastle will only pursue a deal if the player is a good fit at the right price.

Will that be possible with someone like Trossard? It’s difficult to see Brighton wanting to sell their star attacker.

But Newcastle have proven they know how to get it right in the transfer market over the past year, so expect that to continue in January.
