Pundit Robbie Mustoe has suggested that Eddie Howe has made a huge mistake at Newcastle United recently after two successive defeats.
Newcastle were very disappointing in heavy losses to Tottenham and Everton in the last week and questions may now be asked about Howe.
On NBC’s The Two Robbies Podcast, Mustoe suggested that Howe could have made some changes in the games rather than play the same 11 for five games in a row.
Mustoe says Newcastle have to rotate despite injury crisis
Almost everyone apart from the goalkeeper looked exhausted against Tottenham who blew Newcastle away on Sunday evening.
Though there is a serious injury crisis at the club which has essentially forced Howe into picking the same team time and time again, other players will be wondering what actually has to happen for them to get onto the pitch.
It may not be ideal at all to be playing some of the fringe players or academy graduates in big games like this, but when you have players like Kieran Trippier who were as tired as they were and making key mistakes then it’s difficult to see what that’s actually achieving.
Mustoe sympathised with the amount of injuries that Howe has had to deal with but suggested that there are things that he can do at Newcastle to change it up.
On the podcast, Mustoe said: “The only thing I would say is he has got players on the bench. It’s not as if he couldn’t rest and rotate.
“3-0 against Everton, seven goals conceded in two games, is there anything on Eddie Howe here? There are five subs, he could have made some changes to try and freshen things up.
“I know some on the bench are coming back from injury but surely there’s other players in the club who could come and play and trying and give someone a break.”

Newcastle can’t go on this way
If there was anything to take away from that game against Tottenham it’s that Newcastle cannot go up against AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday with the same exact team expecting a different outcome.
As Mustoe suggested, Newcastle have to bring in some fresh faces if they are to have any chance of progressing to the knockout rounds.
Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff returned to the bench, making 30-minute cameos in the capital, but Howe will want to be careful with how he brings them back into the side.
Apart from those two, you’re looking at someone like Lewis Hall who could perhaps step in to give someone else a bit of a breather and inject some energy into the team.
