Former Manchester United defender and current pundit Rio Ferdinand has tipped Newcastle United to avoid the drop this season. Ferdinand believes that Norwich City, Burnley and Watford will go down, and that the money the Magpies have to spend this window will be enough to keep them in the Premier League.
On the ‘Vibe With Five‘ YouTube channel, the former England international said: “I think Newcastle will stay up and then do big business in the summer. I think they’ll go big in the summer.”
In addition, he believes that it’s not just the funds that the Toon Army have that’ll keep them up, ut their approach to the window as well, making strategic signings in comparison to the rest of the teams near the bottom.
“They seem to be doing it (their transfer business) more meticulous and strategic and less gung-ho than other teams who have had money straight away,” Ferdinand added.

One signing in particular Ferdinand believes is ‘huge’ for Newcastle
Earlier in the window, Ferdinand was positive on the signing of Chris Wood from Burnley. On another episode of the ‘Vibe With Five‘ YouTube channel, he described it as a ‘huge move’.
However, he also thought that there would be an uproar if former manager Steve Bruce had done the deal. But some Newcastle fans will argue that wouldn’t have been the case. The whole ‘what if’ argument is certainly something not worth bothering to make.
Wood certainly provides another striking option with injury to main man Callum Wilson. He’s more of a target man and a massive aerial threat for the Magpies.
There’s still potentially more business to be completed on Tyneside. Jesse Lingard is currently the main topic of discussion when it comes to Toon transfer talk.
In addition, Sevilla defender Diego Carlos is the other player on the lips of some Newcastle fans. The Magpies are looking to strengthen defensively but will set them back a lot of money.

Ferdinand has gained a reputation of getting on the wrong side of Newcastle fans. Who could forget when he said that then-manager Rafael Benitez should spend his own money on players?
However, he seems confident that the Magpies can avoid the drop, not just due to their new wealth but also due the intelligence of the recruitment thus far. This is certainly one occasion where we hope he’s right about Newcastle.
