Reporter makes interesting claim about Shelvey and Joelinton’s Newcastle future

Newcastle United’s immediate future belongs in the Premier League, and Jonjo Shelvey and Joelinton have played a big part in that.

At the start of the year, relegation looked increasingly likely. Even with new signings, it was difficult to see how we’d get enough points to escape the bottom three.

But Eddie Howe’s side have done exactly that. Incredibly, he’s taken the Toon into the top half, which is a remarkable achievement.

While a lot of people will talk about the money spent, the most impressive aspect of Newcastle’s resurgence is the way Howe has got more out of the players he already had.

So many Newcastle players have improved under Howe, including Shelvey and Joelinton. The former has captained Newcastle a lot in 2022, and looks revitalised since the change of manager. As for the latter, his turnaround has been simply astonishing.

Joelinton has transformed into a box-to-box midfielder, and suddenly looks like he has a bright future at St James’ Park.

Shelvey and Joelinton ‘not going to be a big part’ of Newcastle future

However, reporter Dean Jones claims that might not be the case.

The ‘transfer insider’ told Give Me Sport: “In terms of central midfielders, however good Shelvey and Joelinton have been for Newcastle, they’re not going to be a big part of that future because they’re going to keep pushing and pushing, striving to get better, and those players will fall to the wayside where they will eventually be replaced by better players, and for a fan, that’s pretty exciting.”

Those comments are extremely intriguing, and perhaps a little presumptuous.

For Shelvey, he’s 30-years-old so no one is expecting him to have a big part in the club’s future. But he can still play a role over the next couple of years.

As for Joelinton, who’s to know what the future holds for the Brazilian. No one thought at the start of the season that he would turn out to be a key player in the centre of midfield. Yet here we are and nowadays he’s somewhat undroppable.

His development has been incredible, so to suggest he’ll definitely be replaced feels harsh. At 25, he can still get even better.

Yes, Newcastle will target better players, but it won’t just be for the sake of it. If Joelinton continues to impress and improve then he’ll likely remain a key player at St James’ Park.
