Callum Wilson is enjoying a season to remember with Newcastle United, but the Athletic claim he is frustrated about something that is missing from his game.

The 30-year-old has scored six goals in 11 Premier League appearances so far. That tally was enough to earn him a place in England’s World Cup squad.

Wilson is currently in Qatar with the rest of Gareth Southgate’s team, preparing for their first game of tournament against Iran on Monday.

Newcastle’s number nine will hope to be involved, having worked so hard to return to the international scene. The last time he represented his country was in 2019.

He has worked incredibly hard to return, especially this season. He suffered an injury setback in August, but was able to return in even better shape and enjoy a spectacular run of form.

Everything is going right for Wilson, but there is reportedly still something missing from his game at St James’ Park.

Wilson frustrated not to score a hat-trick yet for Newcastle

According to the Athletic, Wilson is frustrated by the fact that he is yet to score three goals in one game since moving to Newcastle.

He cost £20million from Bournemouth in 2020, and has hardly struggled for goals in black and white. In 55 league appearances, he’s scored 26 goals. That’s almost a goal every other game.

His record for Newcastle is excellent, but Wilson wishes he had a matchball to prove it.

The forward has came close to getting a hat-trick on a few occasions for Newcastle. He got a brace against Aston Villa earlier in the season, and was agonizingly close to scoring a third.

Wilson has also scored two in a game on five more occasions for the Magpies.

Given his form this season, it feels like a hat-trick isn’t far away. But the most important thing for Eddie Howe is that he keeps scoring. The toon boss would probably prefer Wilson to find the net once in every game rather than score three in 90 minutes before drawing a blank in the next fixture.

But Wilson clearly has an elite mentality. He is always wanting more, and that is only going to make him better.

That is why he is a great asset for England at the World Cup, and why it is a joy to watch him wear the number nine for Newcastle.
