Callum Wilson produced his best performance of the season in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa, but has admitted he is ‘disappointed’ after the game.
The Newcastle United striker was sensational, scoring his fifth and sixth goals of the season.
He opened the scoring in first half stoppage time from the spot, which inevitably opened the floodgates for the Magpies.
Wilson was impressive last week in the away win at Tottenham, and carried on his form into the clash with Aston Villa. The 30-year-old gave Tyrone Mings a torrid afternoon, and sent a clear message to Gareth Southgate with his performance.
It came at the perfect time for Wilson, as the England manager was actually watching on from the stands alongside Toon owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi.

Southgate must have been impressed with the Newcastle number nine. He will certainly have boosted his World Cup hopes with that peformance.
Fans are waxing lyrical about the £20million man’s performance, but the striker is surprisingly disappointed.
Wilson explains why he was ‘disappointed’ after 4-0 win vs Aston Villa
After the game, Wilson spoke to NUFC TV. He was asked how he felt after the 4-0 thrashing of Aston Villa, and provided an interesting response.
“Disappointed,” he said.
“I hit the crossbar, having shots with my left foot, trying to get the third goal. That hat-trick for Newcastle has still not come yet, but nevertheless I’ll take the two goals and the assist for Miggy.
“I think ultimately it’s the bigger picture. We got three points today, got myself on the scoresheet and we move on to next week.”
Elite mentality from Wilson
It speaks volumes about Wilson’s mentality that he’s disappointed after playing so well. He is incredibly hungry for goals at the moment, but has enjoyed a sensational start to the season. And it probably would have been even better had he not been injured.
We saw exactly what makes Wilson special on Saturday. Aston Villa didn’t know how to handle him. He stretched the defence with runs in behind, while he was also happy to play with his back to goal.
The only sour point for Wilson is that he didn’t get the hat-trick. He was agonizingly close, thundering a header off the bar after Jacob Murphy’s cross. He showed off his power and positional sense to tower past Mings, whose side were saved by the woodwork.
While he didn’t get the hat-trick, he did produce his best performance of the season. Southgate will have taken note, and is surely thinking about taking him to Qatar.
For Newcastle fans, we just want him to keep scoring in black and white.
