Report: Why Alan Shearer hasn’t taken a job at Newcastle after the takeover

When the Newcastle United takeover happened last year, it was hoped that the club would reconnect with legends such as Alan Shearer.

The club’s record scorer was heavily critical of the previous regime, and had his own issues with former owner Mike Ashley.

But since he left, Shearer is back in the mix. The bar that was famously named after him then re-named out of spite has returned to being ‘Shearer’s’. Meanwhile, his statue is now on club ground rather than out in the street.

There were also claims that the 52-year-old could be offered a role as an ambassador by the new owners, with talks held between Shearer and co-owner Amanda Staveley.

However, that is yet to come to fruition, and it might never happen.

No job for Shearer at Newcastle for now

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle held talks with both Shearer and Kevin Keegan about becoming an ambassador. They add that both initially had reservations about a possible job.

The Telegraph add that talks have now cooled, with the lack of a big financial package playing a part. Another issue was Shearer’s desire to maintain independence from the club.

The Premier League’s all-time leading scorer is a prominent figure on BBC’s Match Of The Day. He is part of their A-team alongside Gary Lineker and Ian Wright.

With that in mind, working with Newcastle could restrict Shearer’s ability to pass fair judgement on what and how the team are doing.

Given what he would have to give up, it is no surprise that Shearer has not taken up a role at St James’ Park. Nor is it an issue either.

The fact that the lines of communication are open between player and club is a huge step in the right direction compared to what came before.

While Shearer hasn’t got a job at Newcastle, there are plenty of other ex-Toon players who fans would like the club to re-engage with.

One that springs to mind is Jonas Gutierrez. He was treated horrendously by the previous ownership, and fans would love to see him back at St James’ Park in the near future.

But as for Shearer, don’t expect to see him become an ambassador for Newcastle United any time soon.
