The January transfer window is now open and it is expected that Newcastle will be very busy in order to try and steer clear of relegation trouble.
Mike Ashley’s transfer policy was incredibly frustrating but in terms of financial fair play, it means that the club should be able to spend significant sums this month.
It is clear that reinforcements are needed in various areas of the pitch to put together a squad which is good enough for Eddie Howe.
But how much money will be available to spend? A report by Luke Edwards in the Telegraph has made a prediction.

Edwards looked ahead to Newcastle’s window; who they need, who they want and what they have to spend.
He wrote that he expected more than £50 million to be available to Howe and the budget could get as high as £100 million.
That is higher than was initially expected when the takeover was mooted in 2020 and even as recently as October, when around £40 to £50 million was talked about.

Even £50 million, on paper, should be enough for Newcastle to secure players of the right quality and experience to beat the drop.
That is when combined with the ability to pay good wages and perhaps snare players who are into the final months of their contract.
£100 million should be more than enough and would underline the commitment of the owners to give Howe what he needs in order to beat the drop.
Of course, the more money which is sloshing around, the more Newcastle need to be careful that they don’t waste it on the wrong type of players, but Howe has to be trusted to make sure that doesn’t happen.
