Newcastle United are reportedly hopeful that Martin Dubravka will be fit to face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

The Magpies head to the capital on Sunday, following a lengthy spell without a game. By the time they kick off against Spurs, it’ll have been two and a half weeks since the Everton defeat.

Eddie Howe will likely make multiple changes to the team that started at Goodison Park, but one position he’d like to remain untouched is goalkeeper.

Dubravka is enjoying a decent start to 2022, with his return to form coinciding with the Magpies surging up the Premier League table.

However, illness has put his immediate future in the starting XI in doubt.

The 33-year-old was on international duty with Slovakia, but has been sent home due to a throat infection.

According to Newcastle World, it is hoped that Dubravka can recover from his infection in time to face Spurs on Sunday.

They add that the Toon number one is expected to return to first-team training this week.

Dubravka hasn’t been with his teammates since the Everton defeat. While most of Howe’s squad jetted off to Dubai for warm weather training, Dubravka has been on international duty.

However, he hasn’t played a single minute. Neither has Fabian Schar, who was sent home by Switzerland before their clash with England.

Newcastle do have two players featuring further afield, with Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron representing Brazil and Paraguay respectfully in South American World Cup qualifying.

They will hopefully return fit and firing for the game against Tottenham. At the moment, the biggest concerns surround Dubravka and Schar.

If the former isn’t fit, it will likely mean Karl Darlow makes his first Toon appearance since November.
