Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar will not face England this weekend due to injury.

The defender had linked up with the Switzerland squad for the international break, preparing for friendlies against the Three Lions and Kosovo.

However, he will play no part due to injury. According to Swiss website 20min.ch, Schar has trained away from his teammates all week and has now left the camp. They state he has a problem with his adductor muscles.

It remains unclear whether he faces a spell on the sidelines, or whether his immediate return from international duty boosts his chances of featuring for Newcastle against Tottenham on April 3rd.

If it’s the former, it could hand an opportunity Jamaal Lascelles.

Fabian Schar injury is a blow, but it opens the door for Jamaal Lascelles

The Newcastle captain has only started one of the last seven games. That came in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, where Eddie Howe reverted to a back five.

However, Lascelles was back on the bench when Newcastle went back to a defensive four against Everton.

The 28-year-old has been forced to watch from the bench while Schar and Dan Burn have thrived together. They’ve formed a wonderful partnership, leaving Lascelles without a place in the starting XI.

But he could have a route back into the side if Schar is seriously injured.

That would be a real blow for him, as he’s been fantastic ever since Howe took over. He was even given the captaincy against Everton.

But Lascelles will be keen to prove he still has a part to play in this Newcastle side. He was impressive on his last St James’ Park start, while he did well versus Chelsea as well.

Competition for places has really increased at Newcastle. It says a lot when your club captain can’t even get in the team.

But Lascelles might have a chance now following the news about Schar.
