Report: Newcastle to make short-term appointment, DOF search goes on

Newcastle United’s new owners are laying the foundations for January and beyond.

The transfer window is set to be huge for the Magpies, who need multiple reinforcements to aid their Premier League survival bid.

The club are currently looking for a director of football who would lead the recruitment side of things, providing Eddie Howe with the tools to do his job to the best of his ability.

Plenty of names have been linked, but it doesn’t look like a DOF will arrive in the near future. Michael Emenalo has been heavily linked, but Mehrdad Ghodoussi denied claims that he had been offered the job on Twitter.

It had previously been reported that a decision could be delayed until after the January window, much to the dismay of fans. However, the decision probably makes sense with PIF and co unwilling to rush things and potentially make a mistake.

Newcastle have taken a further step towards finding their director of football. The Daily Mail report that they have hired Nolan Partners, a recruitment firm, to lead the search. They add that the process could take at least two months.

How will Newcastle approach the January transfer window?

With at least a two-month search for a director of football on the horizon, Newcastle will lean on someone else for advise going into the January transfer window.

The Daily Mail state that the club are going to appoint a short-term ‘football recruitment advisor’. Their role will be to help the club conduct its business next month.

This seems like a smart approach from Amanda Staveley and the consortium. While they have deep pockets, they have limited football experience.

Bringing in someone with that experience will help them massively in what is set to be an incredibly important and challenging window.

Two names mentioned by the Daily Mail are Nick Hammond and Andy Scott.

The Magpies need to bring in someone soon, with the January window just over three weeks away. Howe will want the owners to move quickly, with time very much of the essence at St James’ Park.
