Newcastle United have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Niklas Sule, as the German giants are reportedly set to offer him a new lucrative contract.

According to TZ, Julian Nagelsmann is keen to keep the German international beyond this season.

Sule’s contract is due to expire in June 2022, with Newcastle one of the many clubs interested in signing the 26-year-old.

As it stands, Eddie Howe’s side would be able to discuss pre-contract terms with Sule’s representatives in the New Year, ahead of a free transfer summer move.

Despite his contract uncertainty, Sule has remained a key part of the Bayern side.

Sule has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, which have mainly come at centre-back.

The defender has also filled in at right-back in the absence of Benjamin Pavard.

Due to the former Hoffeinheim star still being an integral part of the Bavarian side, TZ are reporting that Bayern are willing to offer Sule a contract worth over €10m (£8.4m) a year.

If Sule does sign fresh new terms with the reigning Bundesliga champions, then Newcastle’s chances of signing him practically evaporate.

Although he was well aware before he replaced Steve Bruce, Newcastle’s 3-3 draw at St James’ Park against Brentford, will have once again highlighted the need for Howe to bring in some defensive reinforcements in January.

No side in the top-flight has conceded more Premier League goals than Newcastle (27) in the opening 12 games.

Coming into the game, Thomas Frank’s side had lost their last four Premier League games, but they still managed to score three times against the Magpies in Howe’s first game in charge.

Sule to Newcastle was never really realistic

For all of Newcastle’s new-found riches, we now have 26 games to retain our Premier League status.

In contrast, Sule, who has already won the Champions League with Bayern, will be targeting more silverware as the season draws to its conclusion.

Sule was highly unlikely to leave Bayern and head to Tyneside, when the club is in the midst of scrapping for Premier League survival.

But if he does put pen to paper with a new deal, Howe can at least eliminate Sule’s name from his centre back wish list as the January window draws closer.
