Report: Newcastle plan to offer Miguel Almiron a new contract

Miguel Almiron is reportedly in line for a new contract at Newcastle United.

That is according to the Telegraph, who report that the 28-year-old will be offered a two-year extension on his current deal. That would mean Almiron staying at St James’ Park until 2026.

The Paraguayan joined the club in January 2019 for a then club record fee of £21million. He signed a five-and-a-half year deal, meaning his current contract expires in the summer of 2024.

But given his electric form this season, Eddie Howe wants to keep him around. And rightly so.

The Telegraph add that Almiron is now considered a key player by the manager, and will therefore be rewarded as such. That means a new contract to reflect his status, and likely a pay rise too.

Newcastle are clearly looking to reward their form players, as there is also talk that Bruno Guimaraes could sign a new deal. He could reportedly become the club’s best paid player, and now Almiron could get a wage increase as well.

The report from the Telegraph adds that Newcastle’s hierarchy are looking to ‘ensure all of the main players are tied down to long term deals and wages are consistent’.

Based on his form, there is no doubting that Almiron deserves a new contract at St James’ Park. He has been a revelation this season.

In the past he has struggled for goals and assists. While his attitude and application could never be doubted, he was often ineffective in the final third.

That is why it seemed so pressing that we signed a new right-winger during the summer. That didn’t happen, seemingly leaving us light in attack.

However, Almiron has stepped up in a big way. He has started every game this season, and currently has six goals in 12 appearances. It is his best ever tally in the Premier League.

The former Atlanta United star is enjoying a hot streak at the moment, scoring winners in our past two games – the 1-0 win over Everton and the 2-1 triumph at Spurs.

Almiron is scoring all types of goals, from tap ins to stunners, and is playing with incredible confidence. He looks like someone who can score every week.

The winger has improved so much under Howe, and is now a key player in black and white. It has been quite the turnaround for Almiron, who was beginning to look a bit of a dud.

But the renaissance is complete, and Almiron is another player whose fortunes have been turned around by Howe. His form means that a new contract is se to be put on the table, and he absolutely deserves it.
