Report: Newcastle owners will back Eddie Howe in the January transfer window

The January transfer window of 2022 was a memorable one for Newcastle, and 2023 could be just as exciting for Eddie Howe’s side.

At the start of the year, it was the new owners’ first chance to splash the cash and help the club in the transfer market. Amanda Staveley and co were able to bring in five new faces, including huge names in Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.

The new additions helped keep Newcastle in the Premier League. Without the January investment, it probably wouldn’t have been possible.

Fast forward to the present day, and things are very different at St James’ Park. It’s almost one year since the takeover went through, and Newcastle are a club on the up. The calibre of target has increased too, and there are some exciting names being linked ahead of the next transfer window.

The Newcastle owners spent big during the summer, with Alexander Isak arriving for a club record fee of £59million. There was also £35million spent on Sven Botman.

PIF have invested a lot of money already, and could be willing to do it again at the start of 2023.

Newcastle owners will back Howe in January

According to 90min, the Newcastle owners are keen to provide Howe with the funds he needs in January. Of course, there is still the issue of financial fair play, but the Isak deal proved that the decision makers are prepared to spend big on the right player.

And that might have to happen in January if one of Newcastle’s major targets is to arrive.

James Maddison has been heavily linked again, and he was valued at £60million in the summer. It’s been reported that Newcastle will move for him again, but only if Leicester lower their asking price. However, he will still surely cost at least £40million given his ability.

If a player becomes available who can improve the squad long-term, the owners will bring him in. However, they are not going to spend just for the sake of it. They have already proven that during their tenure at St James’ Park.

But it is very encouraging to hear that Howe will be backed. During the Mike Ashley era, managers were rarely backed, which is why the club stagnated.

That is in the past now though, and Newcastle fans are looking towards the future. And that could mean more exciting arrivals in the January transfer window.
