Newcastle United are now ready to fend off major transfer interest in star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes by offering the player a huge new contract.

That’s according to Brazilian outlet TNT Sports, who claim the Magpies are preparing to make the 24-year-old ‘one of the highest paid’ players in the Premier League.

Having arrived at St James’ Park in January after a deal worth £40m was agreed with French club Lyon, Guimaraes has proven to be a crucial part of Eddie Howe’s starting XI.

Signing a £120,000-a-week deal until the summer of 2026, the midfielder has proven to be an exceptional player for the money paid thus far.

In spite of a hamstring injury having rendered him out of action for four games, the Brazil international has made ten Premier League appearances this term, in which he has bagged two goals and two assists from a defensive midfield position.

Consequently, a whole host of European giants have been touted with interest in the Tyneside player, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid keeping a close eye on his situation in the north-east.

However, according to TNT Sports, in a bid to keep hold of their star man, Newcastle are set to offer Guimaraes a huge contract extension.

Although talks will fully take place after the World Cup, it is said the Magpies are willing to make him ‘one of the highest paid’ players in the Premier League.

Both last season and thus far this season, Guimaraes has ranked as the Toon’s second-best player in the English top-flight.

As a dominant defensive midfielder who possesses the technical ability to play forward, the 24-year-old has averaged the highest number of tackles, the second-highest number of key passes and the third-highest number of dribbles completed this term (via WhoScored).

As a result, the Brazilian talent has also become a fan favourite on Tyneside, which is clearly reflected by his performances on the pitch, and the reciprocated adoration he has for the club’s supporters.

Having only just started his first full season at St James Park, Guimaraes appears happy and content playing for Newcastle, and is reportedly ignoring any transfer speculation regarding a potential exit.

Therefore, this is the perfect time to secure the midfielder down to a new long-term deal with the club. Magpies star Kieran Trippier currently earns £144,000-a-week at Darsley Park, so an offer in the same ballpark, or even higher, can certainly be justified for Guimaraes.
