It’s no secret that Allan Saint-Maximin wants a new deal at Newcastle United.
The Frenchman is one of our most important players, and can often be our only creative spark. He carried us through the Steve Bruce era, winning points on his own with his scintillating ability.
Things haven’t been quite as glorious under Eddie Howe, as Saint-Maximin struggles to maintain his role as Newcastle’s difference maker.
The Magpies found a way to win without him last season, while big names have signed for the club. Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes are the biggest attractions brought in by the new ownership.
In turn, this has brought about an increase in wages. Trippier is reportedly the club’s highest earner on around £110,000-a-week.
Saint-Maximin wants a new deal
There has been a lot of speculation about Saint-Maximin possibly leaving Newcastle this summer. And this has coincided with talk that he wants an improved contract at St James’ Park.
Given the sudden influx of cash at the club and the bigger contracts being given out, it’s understandable that Maxi would want a bigger slice of the pie. After all, he remains one of our star players.
However, Newcastle have had other issues to sort out. Saint-Maximin has a long time to run on his current deal, signing a six-year contract in 2020.
But the Magpies haven’t totally ruled out giving him a new contract.
Where Newcastle stand on the ASM situation
According to the Athletic, Newcastle have told Saint-Maximin’s camp that they are potentially willing to hand the 25-year-old a better deal.
However, it isn’t that straightforward. The report adds that Newcastle want him to prove he deserves more money, while there are also concerns surrounding his conduct. The Athletic state that ASM is constantly reminded to park his car in his designated bay at the club’s training ground.
Things like that are easy for Saint-Maximin to rectify. He must be held to the same standards as everyone else. Professionalism is vital at a football club – especially one where Eddie Howe is manager.
If Saint-Maximin can perform on the pitch and sort out his off-field discrepancies, a new contract should be coming his way.
