The world expected Newcastle United to have a limitless transfer budget this summer, with Eddie Howe splashing the cash on everyone and anyone.

However, that was never going to be the case. And, unsurprisingly, it isn’t the case.

The Magpies have brought in three senior players so far, all of which are welcome additions to Howe’s squad.

Matt Targett was the first to arrive. He cost £15million from Aston Villa, although that includes the amount we paid to loan him in January.

Next over the line was Nick Pope, a £10million arrival from Burnley.

Our third and most recent signing was Sven Botman, who is our most expensive of the summer. It’s been reported that his move from Lille cost Newcastle around £35million.

Howe’s squad has improved, but it needs improve even further. Our defensive ranks have been boosted, but the attack remains what it was last season.

That’s an issue at the moment, as highlighted by our limp offensive performance against Mainz on Monday.

Newcastle need more new signings, but how much money is left in the kitty?

Newcastle have £50m remaining in their transfer budget

According to the Telegraph, the Magpies have about £50million remaining in their summer transfer budget. Spending that remaining £50million would take us to around £100million in total, which is reportedly the top end of our budget.

That means that Sporting Director Dan Ashworth has a very difficult job to do before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle need two more players this summer. We need a striker as backup for Callum Wilson, and a right winger who can be a starter at St James’ Park. And we need to do it with just £50million to play with.

Obviously it’s an obscene amount of money in reality, but not in the football world given the price of players nowadays.

It means we’ve basically got no chance of signing Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen, who reportedly want £60million for the 23-year-old.

How Newcastle spend their remaining transfer budget remains to be seen. Our need for a striker depends on whether or not Wilson can stay fit. In contrast, we’ve got multiple players who can play on the right, but there is huge room for improvement.

Personally, my priority would be to spend the money on a top class winger then look to loan a striker. That might be the best solution, but it is easier said than done.
