According to the Athletic, Newcastle forward Joelinton is looking a lot more confident in training ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Brazilian has had two tough years at St James’ Park.
He was immediately put under huge pressure, arriving as a club record signing at £40million. Not only that, but he was also given the legendary number nine shirt.
Sadly, Joelinton has failed to deliver. In two seasons, he has scored just six Premier League goals. That is nowhere near good enough for a Newcastle United number nine.
But perhaps the 24-year-old could have a much better season in the 2021/22 campaign.
‘Confident’ Joelinton could be a big boost to Newcastle
As the Athletic have stated, Joelinton is looking a lot more confident during training.
He no longer has the burden of being the club’s number nine, while his English is also improving.
He will now wear the number seven shirt, vacated by Andy Carroll following his release.
A confident Joelinton is something we haven’t seen at St James’ Park.
While at times he has impressed, he often looks shy in the killer moments. Even Steve Bruce admitted that he’s not a natural goalscorer.
But Joelinton has looked better when he has played the role of provider. On the rare occasions he played alongside Callum Wilson last season he impressed.
During pre-season, Joelinton has looked decent in games against lower league opposition. He scored a wonderful header in the 2-0 away win against Burton.
But he must take this form into the new season. While he may never live up to his ridiculous price tag, he can certainly still prove his worth in a black and white shirt.
And reports of his improved confidence can only be a good thing going into the new season.
