Newcastle United are reportedly close to signing Santiago Munoz.

No, not Santiago Munez, the fictional character from ‘Goal!’. This is Santiago Munoz, a real footballer who plies his trade in Mexico.

And according to ESPN Digital, the 18-year-old is close to becoming a Newcastle player.

This all seems very strange.

Spoiler alert – if you aren’t aware, Santiago Munez was the main character in football film ‘Goal!’. Munez crossed the border from Mexico to America, and was seen playing football, or soccer, by a former Newcastle scout.

Munez travels to the north east, and eventually becomes a Toon player. He even propels the club to Champions League qualification.

It’s a film that still gets referenced today, with multiple new signings saying it inspired their move to St James’ Park.

But are Newcastle about to sign someone very close to the fictional character?

Newcastle reportedly reach agreement to sign Santiago Munoz

ESPN Digital state that the striker wants to move to Europe, and that Newcastle have reached an agreement.

Munoz currently plays for Santos Laguna in Mexico, and has scored three senior goals.

The youngster emerged on the radar of Newcastle fans earlier this year when he made his first start for the club. Of course, supporters couldn’t believe his name.

Now reports suggest he is on his way to the North East.

It’s hard to know what to make of this story. It all seems very strange.

But if he does join the Magpies, his name will instantly make him a bit of a cult hero.
