Santiago Munez is one of the weirder Newcastle United cult heroes.
From winning that penalty against Fulham to securing Champions League football on the final day against Liverpool, Munez’s rise was incredible.
The only issue is that he’s a fictional player from a film…
Santiago Munez was the lead character in 2005 film ‘Goal!’, which saw a young Mexican man travel to Newcastle and become a professional footballer.

The film had two sequels of varying quality, with ‘Goal 3’ featuring an obscure cameo from Mike Ashley.
But while Santiago wasn’t a real player, he has certainly had an impact on the club.
Callum Wilson cited the film shortly after arriving, while some have drawn comparisons between the careers of Munez and Miguel Almiron.
But now it looks like there is a real Santiago Munez…kind of.
Mexican side Club Santos had a new face in their lineup to play Monterrey on Sunday night, with Santiago Munoz starting his first ever game for the club.
If only the spelling was the same…
That hasn’t stopped Newcastle retweeting Club Santos, and the replies, as expected, have been fantastic.
All we need now is Gavin Harris and the lass from Marcella.
Will the real Santiago Munez please stand up
