Almost one year after being relieved of his duties at Newcastle United, Lee Charnley is being linked with a job at Nottingham Forest.

When the Magpies were taken over on October 7th 2021, Mike Ashley left the club. However, it took a little bit of time for some of his allies to follow him out the door.

First Steve Bruce went, then it was eventually Charnley’s turn. After helping out during the handover period, Charnley’s time as Newcastle chief executive ended on November 19th 2021.

He has since been replaced at St James’ Park, with Darren Eales joining the club this summer. And 319 after his Newcastle exit, Charnley is being linked another job.

He was acting as a consultant for Forest during the summer, but could now receive a permanent post.

According to the Daily Mail, Forest are considering getting rid of current chief executive Dane Murphy. And the report adds that Charnley could replace him if they decide to pull the trigger.

There will be sympathy for Forest from Newcastle fans if that does happen, as Charnley was not a popular figure on Tyneside. He was seen as a yes-man for Ashley, and oversaw years of stagnation.

Now he is gone and Newcastle are looking forwards. But Forest could give him a second chance in the Premier League, and they could even reunite him with a former Toon colleague.

Lee Charnley could be joined by Rafa Benitez at Nottingham Forest

After losing 4-0 to Leicester City on Monday night, Forest are bottom of the league. That has increased speculation that Steve Cooper could lose his job at the City Ground.

And the Daily Mail add that Rafa Benitez will be considered as a replacement if Cooper is sacked.

If that does happen, we could have the unlikely situation of Charnley and Benitez working together again. The Spaniard hardly had a harmonious time at Newcastle, constantly fighting against the board for the better of the club.

However, there was always going to be one winner.

Who knows, perhaps things would be different without the presence of Ashley. However, quite a few dominoes need to fall into place for this strange situation to become a reality.
