Newcastle United could be active when the transfer window reopens, and a new report from the Chronicle shares how the club feel about January.

Eddie Howe’s side are enjoying a strong start to the season. The Magpies are currently sixth after nine games, having lost just once.

Performances have largely been excellent, and there is growing talk in the media about Newcastle challenging for a place in Europe.

That might still be a stretch, but January could play a big part in where the club finish in the Premier League.

And the Chronicle state that Newcastle are feeling calm about the upcoming transfer window. That is an incredible contrast to the mood around St James’ Park going into the January window at the start of 2022.

How Newcastle feel is a stark contrast to last January

Newcastle needed last January. Without it, we possibly wouldn’t have survived.

It was the first chance for the new owners to spend some money and support their chosen manager. However, it was still chaotic.

Newcastle were branded the ‘richest club in the world’, meaning other teams wanted more money for their players. There were also crazy rumours that seemed to be based on little truth.

Behind the scenes, there was no Sporting Director pulling the strings. Howe had to step up into that role, as well as preparing his players for key Premier League games.

It was a crazy month for the Magpies, but it ended incredibly well. Newcastle brought in Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn. They all made a difference last season, and played a key role in achieving survival.

Newcastle needed bodies last January. Howe needed more options. But now the landscape has changed.

There is calm heading into January 2023. Newcastle don’t necessarily need to be active. They very well might be, but there will be no sense of panic or desperation like at the start of this year.

Instead, the Magpies will be looking for a marquee arrival. There has been speculation over James Maddison and Moussa Diaby.

If we are going to sign anyone for the first-team, it will likely be a top player who can push us towards a European finish.

The mood has very much changed at St James’ Park. Fear and chaos has been replaced by belief and optimism.
