Newcastle United have started the season very well, and could do even better if they spend big in the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe’s side are sixth after nine games, having only tasted defeat once. That was the controversial 2-1 loss to Liverpool back in August.

The Magpies have just recorded back-to-back wins, scoring nine goals in total against Fulham and Brentford. It’s made Newcastle’s decent start a very decent start, and now talk of challenging for Europe is ramping up.

While it is still very early in the season, the confidence is pulsing through the team. Howe’s side are playing very well, which is even more impressive given he missed out on big targets during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle wanted to sign a winger and a centre midfielder, but neither arrived.

Those positions will be targeted again when the transfer window reopens, and the club are hoping that chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan will be keen to splash out.

The report from i News adds that Moussa Diaby and James Maddison will be targeted once again. They would both be amazing additions. To be honest, just signing one of them would be enough. But getting both could take us to the next level.

We have already seen this season that the chairman can be convinced to sanction big money moves. He was in attendance for the 3-3 draw with Manchester City when Callum Wilson picked up an injury.

Following the game, he was reportedly inspired to do something big in the transfer market. That led to Alexander Isak joining for a club record fee.

I News believe that Al-Rumayyan will attend another game at St James’ Park before January. A strong performance on that day could lead to more funds being released for January, and the possibility of Maddison or Diaby joining the club.
