Newcastle United smashed their transfer record to sign Alexander Isak back in August, but that was not initially the plan.

Isak arrived from Real Sociedad for a reported £63million, becoming the most expensive player in Newcastle‘s history.

It was a remarkable transfer that came completely out the blue, after it had previously been claimed that the forward was going to cost too much money.

But the Toon owners decided to break the bank, and will be very happy with their decision right now. Isak is playing brilliantly, and was the match winner against Nottingham Forest on Friday night. After his brace, Joe Willock compared him to Premier League legend Thierry Henry.

His goals are propelling Newcastle back into the race for the Champions League, and the exciting thing is that he is only 23-years-old – he can still get even better.

He will go on to prove to be worth every penny, but there was some initial concern over the transfer fee.

Some fear Newcastle overpaid for Alexander Isak in August

According to i News, a Newcastle insider told them ‘we might have overpaid for the player he is now’ back in August when a deal was agreed with Real Sociedad.

The report adds that while the Magpies eventually broke their transfer record to sign Isak, they initially offered a lot less.

i News state that Dan Ashworth’s opening offer was £33million, but it was immediately rejected by the La Liga side. Hours later a deal was agreed after Newcastle massively upped their offer.

Newcastle’s willingness to increase their offer by so much in such a short space of time shows how much potential they think Isak has.

He is a signing for the future, but is already having a huge impact at St James’ Park. The Sweden international has scored decisive goals, and has a big role to play between now and the end of the season.

Luckily Newcastle did break the bank for Isak, and he will have proven to be worth even penny if he is still banging them in at St James’ Park in five years’ time.
