Report: How much Newcastle are willing to pay Erik ten Hag

Erik ten Hag is probably the most ambitious candidate still in the running for the Newcastle job.

While links with Antonio Conte have come and gone, Ten Hag is still seemingly an option for the new Newcastle owners.

Links with the Dutchman coincide with rumours involving Marc Overmars, another reported target for the Magpies.

The former Arsenal winger is reportedly a contender to become the club’s director of football, and would like to bring Ten Hag with him to St James’ Park.

If Ten Hag does replace Steve Bruce then he could become one of the best paid managers in the Premier League.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state that Newcastle are prepared to pay the 51-year-old £11million-per-year. Only Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp earn more than that in the Premier League.

That would be a real statement of intent from Newcastle’s new owners. However, there’s an issue.

Ten Hag might not be keen to join Newcastle right now

The Daily Mail add that Ten Hag is reluctant to leave Ajax right now. He recently signed a new contract with the Dutch outfit, back when Spurs were trying to appoint him as Jose Mourinho’s replacement.

Ten Hag has a good thing going at Ajax. His side are currently top of the Eredivisie, as well as sitting first in their Champions League group after demolishing Borussia Dortmund 4-0 last week.

It’s easy to see why he’d be reluctant to leave in favour of a Premier League relegation battle.

While Newcastle have ambitions to challenge for the title and the Champions League in years to come, they are a million miles away from that right now.

Ten Hag would be a dream appointment, but if he does turn Newcastle down it will act as a reminder that our new found wealth isn’t enough on its own to attract the big names.
