Report claims Cristiano Ronaldo was tempted to join Newcastle this summer

Cristiano Ronaldo has been released by Manchester United, leading to rumours that he will now join Newcastle United.

The Portuguese forward shook the world on Tuesday once again, on what was already a dramatic day in football. While it started with Saudi Arabia beating Argentina, it ended with Ronaldo becoming a free agent.

Manchester United confirmed that the 37-year-old has left the club by mutual consent, with both parties agreeing to end his deal six months early.

It comes after Ronaldo’s blockbuster interview with Piers Morgan, where he criticised the Red Devils and took aim at manager Erik ten Hag.

Since then, the writing has been on the wall for Ronaldo. There was even talk that Manchester United would take legal action against their player.

But the saga is over for now, with Ronaldo set to search for a new club. And that’s where Newcastle apparently come in…

Ronaldo was tempted to join Newcastle

Following Ronaldo’s release, Spanish outlet Marca have reported that the ‘world class’ superstar is deciding whether to join one of two clubs. The first is Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, and the second is Newcastle United, backed by the financial muscle of PIF.

That sounds strange enough to begin with, as there is no indication that the Magpies even want to sign Ronaldo. But then it gets even stranger.

Marca add that Ronaldo was tempted by a possible move to Newcastle during the summer transfer window.

So Marca reckon that Ronaldo, arguably the greatest player of all time, fancied a move to St James’ Park a few months ago. They reckon that he wanted to join the team that was battling relegation last year.

That is incredibly hard to believe. And even if Ronaldo did fancy a move to Tyneside, there wasn’t one on offer.

No chance Ronaldo is moving to St James’ Park

Financially, a deal for Ronaldo would never work. Newcastle have been careful not to increase their wages too much, instead going for a steady approach. That blueprint would have been ripped up if Ronaldo had joined.

And from a football perspective, why would Howe want Ronaldo in his team? Sure, he’s a top class footballer, but he has proven to be more of a hinderance in recent years.

Newcastle have signed the right characters since the takeover, and Ronaldo would not fall into that bracket. He has proven that he will make it all about him and cause unrest when things aren’t going his way.

It has previously been claimed by i News that Newcastle officials laughed off talk of a move for Ronaldo, and ESPN have added that the club have no interest in him after his release from Manchester United.

Did he fancy joining Newcastle? That feels hard to believe. And even if he did, there’s no way he would have wrestled his treasured number seven shirt off of Joelinton.
