Newcastle United shakeup continues.
First Steve Bruce left and was replaced by Eddie Howe. Then it was confirmed that the new boss would be bringing in his own backroom staff.
Now the Athletic have reported that two men who joined the club with Bruce in 2019 have left.
They report Stephen Clemence and Steve Agnew will not be part of Howe’s coaching setup at St James’ Park.
The pair had initially stayed following Bruce’s departure, helping Graeme Jones who became interim manager. But now their time at the club is up.
The three Steves are officially no more.
Agnew and Clemence followed Bruce from Sheffield Wednesday to Newcastle, having also worked with him at Aston Villa.
Clemence’s association with Bruce goes even further, having worked with him at Sunderland and Hull. He was also signed by Bruce as a player back when he was Birmingham City manager.
But while Clemence and Agnew have gone, Jones remains. The 51-year-old only joined the club at the start of the year, and will be working alongside the coaches brought in by Howe.
This is a move that is best for all parties. Agnew and Clemence had been part of the stagnation that came with Bruce. While you could argue Jones is to blame as well, his experience and pedigree should make him a good addition to Howe’s setup.
The departing coaches will no doubt hope Bruce returns to management, but the 60-year-old has instead been spending his time watching the cricket in Dubai.
The majority of the previous regime have now gone. The final exit Toon fans will want to see confirmed is Lee Charnley’s.
But the main thing is that Mike Ashley has gone. And in turn, so has Bruce.
Now supporters can look forward to the future with new owners and Eddie Howe, starting on Saturday against Brentford.
