With the season nearing its conclusion, Newcastle United need to make some big contract decisions about a selection of their players.

A few members of Eddie Howe‘s squad are on the brink of leaving St James’ Park, with their Newcastle United contracts set to expire next month.

Loris Karius, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie and Mark Gillespie are all yet to discover their fate. Howe has suggested that Dummett could receive a new deal, while Ritchie is currently facing up to the reality of never playing for the club again after suffering a season-ending injury.

As for Karius, a new report from Italy has suggested that he has already decided what the future holds for him after just one competitive appearance in a Toon shirt.

Loris Karius interested in Italy move

According to Inter Live, Karius is interested in a move to Italy this summer. That is due to family reasons, with his Italian girlfriend Diletta Leotta currently pregnant with their first child.

The report suggests that Inter Milan is a possible destination for the 29-year-old, which was rumoured shortly after the Carabao Cup final.

That game at Wembley remains Karius’ one and only Newcastle appearance. He had to start the Magpies’ biggest game in years due to Nick Pope being suspended.

The German didn’t let anyone down on his Toon debut, but was unable to help Newcastle end their trophy drought as Manchester United won 2-0 in the EFL Cup final.

Karius, who was previously called ‘very good by Kieran Trippier, has not featured since, and has not even been on the bench for Howe’s side.

It was reported earlier this year that Newcastle could keep Karius and give him a new contract, but that now feels unlikely. His family situation means that he needs to do what is best for him and his partner, which means joining an Italian club like Inter is the most likely outcome.

It won’t be difficult to say goodbye to Karius, because in truth we have barely seen him. But it is a shame that he does not leave a hero, after passing up the chance to become a Newcastle legend at Wembley.
