Alan Shearer could reportedly be the first Newcastle legend to return to the club following the takeover.
The deal was confirmed on Thursday evening, with Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium buying the club from Mike Ashley.
The new owners have a lot of work to do as they look to rebuild the club, and it looks like they are trying to reengage with Toon legends who were pushed aside during the Ashley era.
It was reported on Thursday night that Staveley had contacted both Shearer and Kevin Keegan about an ambassadorial role at St James’ Park.
And according to the Telegraph, Shearer is likely to accept.
The report states that the conversation between the club’s record scorer and Staveley was productive, and should lead to Shearer’s return.
The Telegraph add that Shearer will accept the ambassadorial role if he can fit it around his other work commitments. The 51-year-old is a regular pundit on Match of the Day, while also writing for the Athletic.
It will be exciting to see Shearer back at the club, even if it’s just a small role.
He was shunned by Ashley after managing the Magpies in 2009, and saw Shearer’s Bar rebranded to Nine Bar.
The former number nine has often been critical of the club during the Ashley era, and will be very excited about what the future holds for Newcastle United.
