Alan Shearer has given his immediate reaction to the Newcastle United takeover on Twitter.
The deal is official. Mike Ashley no longer owns the Magpies.
There is incredible joy among Toon fans right now, who have waited patiently for the day that they get their club back.
Today is that day. On October 7th 2021, the Saudi-backed consortium completed a deal to buy Newcastle United.

Shearer has summed it up perfectly on Twitter. He wrote: “Yesssssssss. We can dare to hope again.”
Hope is the key word. It is a word that was never used during the Ashley era, unless it had ‘no’ in front of it.
But now fans can dream again. They can believe that their club wants to achieve things.
We will no longer just be ticking along. Instead, we will see a completely new Newcastle United.
This takeover saga has been long and it has been tough.
Amanda Staveley’s consortium agreed a deal to buy the club in April 2020. It has taken 18 months, but finally they have completed a deal.

Shearer’s reaction is bang on, and he will be speaking as a fan. Yes, he’s a club legend and our record scorer, but he was a fan first.
He also suffered professionally during the Ashley era, treated horrendously after the club were relegated in 2009.
Hopefully Shearer, and many other Toon legends, are welcomed back into the club by the new owners.
But until then Shearer, and every single Newcastle fan, can hope again.
