Alan Shearer has been really impressed with one of Newcastle United’s targets this season.
Newcastle are looking to add more firepower to their attack especially with Callum Wilson’s future at the club now uncertain, and they are understood to be considering Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke as a replacement.
On The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer explained how he’d been so impressed with Solanke’s all round game this season in which he has scored 12 goals already in the Premier League.
Shearer tips Newcastle target for England success
Solanke has often flattered to deceive in recent years in the top flight as his goalscoring record hasn’t been anywhere near good enough for a quality striker with hopes of an international future.
However, the 26-year-old looks to have come on leaps and bounds this season as he has impressed in most games, particularly against Newcastle when he scored a brace to secure all three points.
Newcastle first registered their interest in the attacker earlier this month though nothing looks to have come from it, but they may return either at the end of January or in the summer.
Shearer himself, who knows what it takes to be a top striker at Newcastle, has identified Solanke as one of the best players in the league this season and thinks he could be in consideration for the England team this summer.
On the podcast, Shearer said: “He is having a really, really impressive season. My guess is that he will take two back-ups to Harry. Watkins plus another. Now he is going to be up against competition from Ivan Toney, Callum Wilson, perhaps Bowen.
“So he is having a great season but for England… if he continues to blast them in between now and the end of the season then I would say so but you then also have to have a look at some of the others.”

Newcastle will replace Wilson in the next six months
As previously mentioned, Newcastle are going to need a brand new striker next season to help support Alexander Isak who has proven to be the star man in the Magpies’ attack, and Shearer thinks Solanke could be just that.
A recent report suggested that Wilson will be leaving the club in the summer if not in January as they look to cash in on the 31-year-old with 18 months left on his contract while they still can.
This leaves the door open for a possible move for Solanke, a Premier League proven talent who Eddie Howe is already very familiar with having signed him for the Cherries in the first place.
The only issue with this is that Solanke will not come cheap and it depends on whether or not Newcastle would be willing to commit so much of their budget on a player who wouldn’t get into their best starting 11 when everyone is fully fit.
