Ahead of the game against Brentford this weekend, Eddie Howe spoke to the press. Newcastle United are in a great run of form, unbeaten in their last six matches.
The Magpies boss had high praise for new signing Dan Burn, as well as Matt Targett, who is on loan from Aston Villa. Both have been influential players in the Toon’s change of form.
Speaking in today’s press conference (reported on the club’s Twitter account) Howe stated, “Dan has fitted in really well, as has Matt on that left-hand side of our defence. Dan has used the ball really well. He’s been composed, talked well and has leadership qualities.”
“Both have taken to what we’ve asked them to do excellently. They have defended very well first and foremost. They have really helped our team and I’ve been really pleased with both.”

Burn and Targett have vastly improved Newcastle’s defence
For much of the season, the Magpies have been very shaky at the back. Since the window closed they’ve really improved the back four.
Both Burn and Targett have experience of playing in the Premier League, with Brighton and Aston Villa respectively. In a relegation battle, it’s essential for any team.

Alongside Fabian Schar, ‘big’ Dan Burn has really shone. The partnership has been very effective against Aston Villa and West Ham. Burn was given the Man of the Match by Sky Sports for the performance against the Villains.
Also, Matt Targett has settled into the side very well at left-back. A position which Newcastle have lacked in quality for some time. He was cool, calm and collected against Everton and West Ham. Some fans already hope the club can come to a deal for the 26-year-old.

The two have been extremely important for Newcastle as of late and should start against Brentford. In addition, will be a big test for Howe’s side, his first game in charge was against the Bees. Furthermore, with both sides looking to distance themselves from relegation, it will be a tense affair.
Additionally, with long-term injuries like Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson, as well as the possibility of Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser and Javier Manquillo not being available, the Toon will need to be at their best.
