Matt Targett impresses for Newcastle once again, and the stats back it up

Matt Targett starred as Newcastle United picked up a point against top-four challengers West Ham United. The Magpies extended their unbeaten run to six as both sides netted in a 1-1 result.

Joe Willock got his first goal of the season, capping off an impressive performance from the midfielder. However, he had competition for the Toon’s man of the match.

Targett returned to the side after missing the last game against his parent club Aston Villa. The left-back put in an impressive showing once again.

Targett was signed near the end of the window, being announced on transfer deadline day. His loan move is until the end of the season, according to the club’s website.

With just two appearences to his name, Targett is proving to be a great signing

Against both Everton and now West Ham, the 26-year-old has solidified his place in the starting XI. At Villa he certainly proved himself to be Premier League quality.

It was the arrival of Lucas Digne that caused Targett to head to Tyneside. He wanted first-team football and he’s getting that at Newcastle.

Against West Ham, the Englishman boasted some impressive stats. He won 100% of his ground duels, crossed the ball 12 times and gave away no fouls.

Additionally, he made three key passes and overall completed 35 out of his 48 passes (all stats from Sofascore). With the Toon’s next match away at Brentford, Targett will definitely be starting at left-back once again.

Some Newcastle fans will be disappointed to know that the left-back doesn’t have an option to buy at the end of his loan deal, according to The Athletic.

However, if he continues in the rich vein of form that he’s currently showing, the Magpies should definitely go after him this summer. You get the feeling Targett would want to come if he has a successful spell – it would establish him as a starter.

So far it’s looking like a really strong pick up from Newcastle. Targett is looking the business at left-back, performing well against fellow relegation rivals Everton and top four challenging West Ham. Hopefully, this continues against Brentford this weekend.
