Reading are confident they can land former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll on a new contract. The English forward signed a two-month deal back in November which expired last weekend. But The Sun report they’re confident they can secure a deal that will see him play until the end of the season.

‘Big AC’ gave the Royals the lead against Middlesborough, but two goals from Matt Crookes late on saw their away trip end in defeat.

Last week he also scored two absolute screamers that were chalked off for offside in a 7-0 defeat to Fulham. Newcastle’s relegation rivals Burnley are interested, according to MailOnline.

Reading close to re-signing Carroll, a move to Burnley won’t be on the cards

In the same report by The Sun, Reading boss Veljko Paunovic is quoted as saying that it wouldn’t be the last time Carroll plays at the Madejski stadium.

He said, “It’s a technical issue in terms of his contract expiring today but that doesn’t mean that he’ll leave.”

Newcastle dealt Burnley a huge blow by signing their striker Chris Wood for a fee of £25 million. With the cash acquired from the activation of his release clause, they’ll be on the hunt for a striker.

Carroll was one of the names linked. However, with Reading looking to sort a new deal for the ex-England international, that move looks to be dead in the water.

The Royals are in a relegation battle of their own and will want to get Carroll re-signed as soon as possible. His goal last weekend was his second for club along with an assist, providing three-goal contributions in eight appearances for Reading.

Burnely has put an appeal in to cancel their game against fellow survival fighting Watford. Showing the loss of Wood and COVID cases in the squad have really affected them. They already have three games in hand on Newcastle and another cancellation would add to that.
