Callum Wilson is in the form of his life, with his efforts putting Newcastle United in pole position to qualify for the Champions League.
It looked like Newcastle and Wilson were faltering at the start of the year, but there has been a real resurgence since beating Wolves at the end of March.
That game kicked off a remarkable run of form for the Magpies, and saw Alexander Isak come into the team ahead of Wilson. It was a decision that made sense, as the 31-year-old was struggling. As Garth Crooks said, it looked like Wilson had ‘run out of steam‘ after the World Cup.
But now he appears to be back to his best, revitalised despite no longer being a guaranteed starter at St James’ Park. Wilson’s form is exceptional, netting eight goals in his previous seven games. He is now Newcastle’s top scorer with 15, enjoying his best ever season in the Premier League.
Callum Wilson named in Garth Crooks’ team of the week
After scoring a brace in the win over Southampton, Wilson has been included in Garth Crooks’ BBC Sport Team Of The Week.

The pundit has praised Wilson, and thinks he knows why the Toon number nine is suddenly banging in the goals once again.
“It would appear that the enforced rest by Eddie Howe on his England striker has done him the world of good,” he wrote.
“Callum Wilson’s World Cup excursion seemed to take its toll on the player as his form dipped on his return to league football.
“Fortunately for Newcastle Alexander Isak has filled in brilliantly for Newcastle as Wilson slowly came back to form.
“Wilson has now regained his sharpness and looks a real threat in front of goal again, scoring twice in the win over Southampton.”
Eddie Howe works his magic on Newcastle’s number nine

Howe’s decision to take Wilson out of the team has proven to be a massive success, and for multiple reasons.
Firstly, it gave Isak the chance he has been waiting for. The 23-year-old has been absolutely outstanding, with Alan Shearer describing him as ‘unplayable‘. He appears to be the complete centre forward, providing more than just goals. He does score too, however, finding the net 10 times during an injury-hit debut season in England.
Secondly, Howe’s decision has given Wilson a chance to recharge his batteries, whilst also giving him fresh motivation. He did not look fit at the start of the year, but Newcastle didn’t really have many other options.
But now Howe has had the luxury of rotating his strikers, and it has forced Wilson to raise his game. The performances of Isak have given Wilson the motivation he clearly needed. Combine that with his renewed sharpness and he is one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers right now.
